This drawing is derived from a photo I found while on Instagram. The ram was bred on a Merino stud called "Salt Creek" in Woorndoo, Victoria. The Coy family have been breeding super fine merino wool of 18-16 micron for the last 110 years in Woorndoo.
This ram presents with a strong gaze which makes me imagine he’s asking “Who are you and what are you doing in my shearing shed?”, hence the name “The Overseer”. Paired with the strong presentation, the photograph also caught my attention as he is a very good looking ram. The crowning horns, short velvet hair on the face and loads of thick wool represents everything a healthy young ram should be. This thick wool was however the bane of my existence because of the texture, detail and the multiple shades that were very close together, making it difficult to replicate. Nevertheless, I am extremely happy with the final product.
The drawing was awarded highly commended at the 2016 Brisbane Ekka from 73 entrants.
